Is Your Income Protected? | Income Protection Awareness Week 2025

When you think about your finances, your mortgage is usually your biggest commitment. But what would happen if your income suddenly stopped because of illness or injury?

That’s the question at the heart of Income Protection Awareness Week (22–26 September 2025), which highlights the importance of protecting your income.

Why income protection matters

In 2024, income protection insurers paid out a huge £204 million in claims. Despite this, a recent survey revealed that only 15% of young homeowners feel they fully understand income protection. Even more concerning, 57% of 18–34 year olds said they would face financial difficulty within six months if they lost their income.

Many said they’d try to take on extra work or cut back on savings to cope. While this may seem like a solution, it can quickly put pressure on both financial and emotional wellbeing – and it doesn’t guarantee mortgage payments can always be covered.

The link between income and your mortgage

As a mortgage broker in Cramlington, I speak to many clients across Northumberland and Newcastle who are focused on securing the right mortgage deal, but haven’t thought about how they’d keep up with repayments if their income stopped. Protecting your income means protecting your home – it’s as simple as that.

Final thought

This Income Protection Awareness Week, take the time to review your cover. It’s not just about having a mortgage – it’s about making sure you can always afford it, no matter what life throws at you.

As with all insurance policies, conditions and exclusions will apply. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
